Car manufacturers can be under fire for a number of different reasons. It doesn’t matter if it’s a luxury European brand or made in the U.S.A. vehicle. With over 30,000 parts making up each individual vehicle, something is bound to go wrong at some point, right?
Recently, Mazda has been under fire for chipping paint problems on their vehicles painted Soul Red Crystal. Mazda glamorizes the color to be full of “vibrancy and energy with an increased depth and gloss…exemplifying the beauty and sophistication…” Yet, if you just do a quick search online for “Mazda soul red paint,” you’ll get tons of results from customers with the same complaint.
Here at Mid Island Collision Center, we are always informed on the latest auto repair industry news (including manufacturer problems) so we know how to best serve you. We feel it’s our job to let car owners like you know about the problems of specific car manufacturers. That way, you have a better understanding of the importance of taking your car to be repaired somewhere that is aware of these manufacturer problems. Many body shops fail to educate themselves and as a result, they repair vehicles using methods that are long outdated.
Ever since advanced safety features became a standard on most modern vehicles, car repair has become extremely complicated. It requires extensive training from the technicians to be up-to-date on how to properly repair a vehicle and not base it on “experience.” They also need to be continually checking repair procedures released by a car’s manufacturer before they even begin a repair. These are known as OEM repair procedures. They are the highest quality and safest repair you can get for your car. The best auto body shops only follow OEM repair procedures and never take any shortcuts. One thing to keep in mind is that an OEM repair is very complex and can actually cause lasting damage to your vehicle if done wrong.
This also applies for paint repair on vehicles, which is not as simple as spraying some paint on the car in the paint booth. It requires color matching and a process that technicians need to follow. It takes specialized expertise to perform any paint job, whether it’s an allover spray job or just some spot paintwork. This can be accomplished using a computerized, state-0f-the-art paint-matching system and a paint booth with the right amount of airflow.
Chipping Soul Red Crystal Paint in Mazda’s
As we mentioned above, owners of Mazda soul red crystal vehicles are facing the same problem: the paint is chipping at an excessive rate. This is primarily because the paint is so thin and doesn’t have a thick enough layer to absorb the harsh sun, creating several chips across the car. There are countless online forums and petitions filled with owners all facing the same problems. What makes matters worse is car owners are having to pay to repair this problem out of pocket to the dealer rather than the dealer seeing this is a global issue and issuing a recall.
Check out these images of some of the affected cars:
What’s interesting is soul red crystal won the Auto Color Designers’ Selection award at the Auto Color Awards back in 2013. However, Mazda even admitted two years ago that paint repair on soul red crystal painted cars is not as simple as sanding and applying a new coat. Take a look at what Mazda production communication specialist Jacob Brown said:
“There’s no way to get around this…[Soul Red Crystal is] more complicated than what you’d find on any other car at their price points…” (Repairer Driven News)
